Phoenix and Seoul regions of Oracle Cloud and Azure interconnect increase multicloud opportunities

James Ronneberg | January 12, 2022

We’re pleased to announce the general availability of two more regions connecting Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) and Microsoft Azure. The OCI US West (Phoenix) cloud region is now interconnected with the Azure West US 3 region. The OCI South Korea Central (Seoul) cloud region is now interconnected with the Azure Korea Central region. Oracle and Microsoft have 10 interconnected cloud regions worldwide.

With this interconnect service, customers in these regions can now migrate and run mission-critical enterprise workloads across their Microsoft Azure and OCI environments with a private dedicated low-latency connection and identity federation. The partnership also offers a collaborative, comprehensive support model. With multiple OCI regions in both North America and South Korea, customers can take advantage of multiregion and multicloud architectures for disaster recovery and service delivery across cloud regions with data and applications remaining within a single country. Multicloud strategies have become critically important to our customers, as they apply the strength of multiple cloud providers, reduce single-source supplier risks, and ensure resiliency and capacity.

Simple configuration, high performance

The setup of the interconnection is a straightforward process: You can use the Oracle Cloud Console and Microsoft Azure Portal to configure interconnection between OCI and Azure, and then streamline the configuration. Using single sign on to manage resources across both OCI and Azure, companies can unify Identity and Access Management (IAM) policies, reuse jointly tested and validated deployment architectures, and tap their existing Oracle and Microsoft customer support relationships from either environment.

We performed ICMP latency using microsecond interval and throughput testing using a 1-Gbps port size of a private interconnect between the OCI US West (Phoenix) region and the Azure West US 3 region. The results showed a 2-ms round-trip latency between an OCI virtual machine (VM) and an Azure VM and 957-Mbps throughput using a 1-Gbps port size interconnect.

Similarly, we performed ICMP latency using microsecond interval and throughput testing using a 1-Gbps port size of a private interconnect between the OCI South Korea Central (Seoul) region and the Azure Korea Central region. The results showed a 1.2-ms round-trip latency between an OCI VM and an Azure VM and 968-Mbps throughput using a 1-Gbps port size interconnect.

We also validated a database workload in these interconnected cloud regions using a two-node Oracle VM Real Application Clusters (RAC) database running on OCI and a Swingbench database workload running on an Azure VM to ensure that database transactions were completed successfully without any transaction failures and with optimal performance. We ran online-transaction processing (OLTP) workloads, decision-support system (DSS), and mixed workloads (both OLTP and DSS together) using private interconnect between OCI and Azure in this test.

Next steps

These two regions join the following available interconnected regions:

  • Oracle Cloud’s UK South (London) region to Azure UK South

  • Oracle Cloud’s Netherlands Northwest (Amsterdam) region to Azure West Europe

  • Oracle Cloud’s Germany Central (Frankfurt) region to Azure Germany West Central

  • Oracle Cloud’s US East (Ashburn) region to Azure US East

  • Oracle Cloud’s Canada Southeast (Toronto) region to Azure Canada Central

  • Oracle Cloud’s Japan East (Tokyo) region to Azure Japan East

  • Oracle Cloud’s US West (San Jose) region to Azure US West

  • Oracle Cloud’s Brazil Southeast (Vinhedo) region to Azure Brazil South

We plan to continue to invest in this unique partnership and are adding more interconnected regions for our customers. Check back to keep up to date on our ever-growing expansion.
